Lakers on Brink of Elimination
LOS ANGELES — There was plenty of blame to go around after the Los Angeles Lakers squandered a 13-point fourth quarter lead during their 103-100 loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder Saturday night. Kobe Bryant hoped for more aggressiveness from the Lakers All-Star forward Pau Gasol.
“Pau’s got to be more assertive,” Bryant said. “He’s the guy out there that we need. When he’s getting the ball he’s looking to pass. He’s got to be aggressive. He’s got to shoot the ball. He’s got to drive the ball to the basket and he will in the next game.”
Gasol didn’t attempt a field goal in the fourth

ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Midfielder Drew Snider scored three goals and goalie Niko Amato led a solid defensive effort Saturday as Maryland upset second-seeded Johns Hopkins 11-5 in the quarterfinals of the NCAA tournament.
Midfielders John Haus and Mike Chanenchuk each scored two goals for Maryland (11-5), which advances to the semifinals for the second straight season as an unseeded team.
It will be the 21st Final Four appearance for the Terrapins, who lost in the national championship game last season.
Midfielder Kevin Cooper and attackman Joe Cummings both added a goal and an assist for Maryland, which will meet the winner of Sunday’s quarterfinal between third-seeded Duke (14-4) and Colgate (14-3).
Amato made seven saves and got support from a defense of Goran Murray, Brian Cooper and Michael Ehrhardt as Maryland held
CHICAGO — With his wife and kids at his side, and all his Chicago Cubs teammates, as well as the coaching staff, standing in full uniform behind him, Kerry Wood made his retirement official Saturday afternoon.
If Friday was about getting in his last major league pitch, Saturday was about thanking everybody that made his career last as long as it did.
Standing at Wrigley Field’s home plate, the area he focused on so many times during a 15-year career, Wood not only saluted the coaches and players he worked with but also reserved kind words for the doctors and physical therapists that brought him back time and time again from injury.

CONCORD, N.C. — Dale Earnhardt Jr. didn’t need the fan vote this year.
Earnhardt won the Sprint Showdown on Saturday night to pick up a transfer spot into the $1 million All-Star race. His exemption from his 2000 victory expired last year, and NASCAR’s most popular driver needed fans to vote him into the All-Star race in 2011.
This time, he just dominated the 40-lap qualifier to take a spot in the main event.

“I feel real fortunate to have drove my way into the All-Star race,” Earnhardt said. “My fans work hard to vote, and I never assume that I’m going to win the vote. The fan support is a gift and I never take it for granted. We feel real lucky to have an opportunity to race. We’re going to enjoy it having earned our way in this year.”
Pole-sitter AJ Allmendinger had a flat tire headed to the green flag, and was forced to pit at the start of the race. But he drove through the field and passed Jamie McMurray right before the white flag to earn the second transfer
New York Giants defensive end Osi Umenyiora offered to buy and return Lawrence Taylor‘s Super Bowl XXV ring to the Pro Football Hall of Famer, but only if Umenyiora attained 500,000 Twitter followers by 10 p.m. Saturday.
Umenyiora, relatively new to the social media site, had roughly 54,600 followers as of 10 p.m. Saturday, falling quite short of the threshold needed to fulfill his promise to purchase the ring being auctioned off by Taylor’s son, Lawrence Taylor, Jr., and SCP Auctions.
As of approximately 10:15 p.m. Saturday, there were 29 bids on the ring and the current bid was $174,546.

The auction began Thursday and was scheduled to end Saturday night. A new release estimated the ring to be be worth between $75,0000 and $100,000.
Taylor’s agent, Mark Lepselter, previously told FoxSports.com that the linebacker was unaware his son was auctioning off the ring, but was fine with his son’s choice. Taylor gave the ring to
LOS ANGELES — Kevin Durant stood above the 3-point line and watched the shot clock dwindle in the final seconds of Game 4. When Metta World Peace backed up slightly on defense, Durant hesitated only an instant before launching a 26-footer.
“It left my hand, (and) I was thinking, ‘If this doesn’t go in, it’s going to be a terrible shot,’” Durant said.

Jimme Johnson Wins All-Star Race
CONCORD, N.C. — It’s not often a race car driver intentionally cruises slowly at the back of the field.
Jimmie Johnson did it for roughly 60 laps Saturday night, and it earned him a cool $1 million payday.
Johnson used a calculated strategy — he drove hard for the first and last segments, and coasted for the three in between — to join the late Dale Earnhardt and Jeff Gordon as the only three-time winners of NASCAR’s All-Star race.
The five-time champion won the first 20-lap segment of the Sprint All-Star race, then deliberately faded to the back for the next three 20-lap segments at Charlotte Motor Speedway. His plan was to keep the No. 48 Chevrolet out of trouble, then make his play for the win in the fifth and final segment.
“We did a strategy that we thought was best for our team,” he said.
It certainly was, even if it was the antithesis of what race car drivers do for a living.
But it worked for this year’s new format, which guaranteed the winners of the first
